Executive Director
María Arriaga Villagómez is a Mexican immigrant, born in Morelia, Michoacán, and raised in Moroleón, Guanajuato México. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the Michoacan University of San Nicolas de Hidalgo (UMNSH).
María's media career began early, working at RadioSA, where she served as a writer, creative team member, and prime-time announcer. Upon immigrating to the United States, she continued her media journey with roles at Radio Lobo, Telemundo Nebraska, and iHeartRadio’s “El Patrón,” amassing over 12 years of experience. She is a passionate advocate for the Latino community, consistently using her platform to highlight and address their issues.
Her journey in the U.S. began in a meatpacking plant, where she worked for a year while also working part-time in radio. She later worked as a paralegal in an immigration law firm and served in the Iowa State Government's Department of Labor. Recently, she has been involved in non-profit organizations, focusing on social work and community outreach.
As an immigrant, Latina, and Mexican, María proudly represents her heritage and experiences. She tells her community, "I understand you, I know your problems, and that's why I want to help you and change it."
As Executive Director of the Nebraska Commission On Latino Americans, María's leadership skills ensure that Latinos in the state are acknowledged and their voices heard across all levels of government. Known for her compelling keynote speeches, she is dedicated to advocating for the Latino community, which is her true passion.
Additionally, María serves as a Trustee of the Omaha Public Library. She is a passionate advocate for her culture, animal rights, and women's rights.
