Office of the Attorney General
The Attorney General is one of six statewide constitutional officers in Nebraska. The duties and authority of the office are derived from the State Constitution, statutory enactments, and the common law. Generally speaking, the Attorney General is responsible for the representation of the state in all legal matters, both civil and criminal, where the state is named as a party, or may have an interest in the outcome of the litigation or dispute. At any given time, the office has more than 2,000 active cases, in areas as diverse as prosecution of child abusers and major drug dealers, environmental protection enforcement, tort claims, death penalty appeals, water law, wrongful discharge from employment, eminent domain, state constitutional law, federal constitutional law, consumer protection, automobile accidents, discipline of healthcare professionals, and inmate litigation.

EMPLEO Workplace Discrimination Hotline

The Employment Education and Outreach (EMPLEO) toll-free number provides assistance in Spanish and English to individuals, regardless of their immigration status. Individuals that have faced wage theft, a worker rights violation, and/or employment discrimination are incouraged to call. Volunteers answer the call, record the complaint, and pass it on to the Department of Labor for action against the employer. All complaints are confidential, and services are provided by the Department of Labor free of cost.
Nebraska Court Interpreter Directory
When in need of a certified language interpreter, please refer to the statewide Nebraska Court Interpreter Directory. Trial Court Services maintains an on-call remote interpreter calendar weekdays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. CST.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration
With the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to ensure safe and healthy conditions for workers, by setting and enforcing standards and providing training, outreach, education and assistance. OSHA is part of the United States Department of Labor. The administrator for OSHA is the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health. OSHA's administrator answers to the Secretary of Labor, who is a member of the cabinet of the President of the United States.
Nebraska Legal Aid
Legal Aid of Nebraska provides "dignity, hope, self-sufficiency and justice through quality civil legal aid for those who have nowhere else to turn." The fundamental goal of the program is to provide free legal representation to underprivileged citizens, and to cultivate self-sufficiency among their clients. Nebraska Legal Aid represents clients in federal, district, and tribal courts, as well as state and federal administrative tribunals. They cater to the legal needs of the state's poverty-stricken, refugees and other new Americans in homeless shelters and ethnic centers. Legal Aid also delivers innovative, specialized programs designed to strengthen the community on top of providing advocacy, legal representation and counseling to all eligible clients. Volunteer Lawyers Project
The Volunteer Lawyers Project is a statewide volunteer legal services project and referral network founded on the belief that all citizens should have access to the legal system, regardless of ability to pay. Established in 1982 as a project of the Nebraska State Bar Association, the project seeks to match low-income indiduals who face civil legal problems with attorneys who are willing to provide legal assistance on a pro bono, reduced fee, contingency fee, or full fee basis. Any attorney who is an active member of the Nebraska State Bar Association may participate in the program. Any individual with a civil legal issue may apply for assistance from the Volunteer Lawyers Project. The program is not able to assist with any criminal matters, including misdemeanors and traffic violations. Because there are usually more requests for assistance than there are attorneys to accept cases, issues are ranked by priority, with the most urgent needs receiving attention first.

The vision of the Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission is the elimination of unlawful discriminatory practices in the State of Nebraska. During their monthly meetings, the NEOC hears public comment; rules on cases dealing with age, public accommodations, and housing; votes on administrative closures; and handles agency business. The meetings are open to the public, and follow the rules of the Public Meetings Act.
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) - Nebraska
ACLU Nebraska, an organization with a diverse membership, is committed to the protection of civil liberties of all persons. These liberties include those rights secured by the Constitutions of the Unites States and the State of Nebraska.
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. From the ballot box to the classroom, the thousands of dedicated workers, organizers, leaders and members who make up the NAACP continue to fight for social justice for all Americans.
Nebraska Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence
The Nebraska Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence is a statewide advocacy organization that is committed to the prevention and elimination of sexual and domestic violence. The Coalition has 20 member programs that provide direct services to survivors across the entire state of Nebraska. Services include: A 24-hour crisis line, legal referrals/assistance with protection orders, emergency shelter, ongoing support individually and through support groups, transportation, education and prevention programs, and medical advocacy and referrals. Legal services are offered to help survivors with T-Visa (Human Trafficking) U-Visa (Domestic Violence) and Self-Petitions. Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF)
Founded in 1968, MALDEF is the nation's leading Latino legal civil rights organization. Often described as the "law firm of the Latino community," MALDEF promotes social change through advocacy, communications, community education, and litigation in the areas of education, employment, immigrant rights, and political access.
League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)
The Mission of the LULAC is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population of the United States.
Nebraska Appleseed
Nebraska Appleseed is a non-profit, nonpartisan, public interest law firm that works for equal justice and full opportunity for all Nebraskans. Nebraska Appleseed uses litigation, public policy reform, and community education to positively impact low-income families, immigrants, children in foster care, and access to healthcare.
Nebraska State Bar Association (NSBA)
The Nebraska State Bar Association works for Nebraska attorneys to help them both achieve the highest standards of competence, ethics and professionalism, and to protect and promote the administration of, and access to justice.
The NSBA has an on-call interpreter pilot program for use by attorneys serving clients with limited English proficiency. Through a grant from the Woods Charitable Foundation, they are able to provide free on-call interpreter services. During the pilot, attorneys will need to schedule their appointments with court interpreters through the NSBA by calling 402-475-7091 or sending an email request to interpreters@nebar.com. Interpreters can be used for a variety of activities (e.g., reviewing contracts or court orders, negotiations, mediations, depositions, etc.) The minimum time allotted for an appointment through the pilot is 30 minutes.
The NSBA currently has Spanish and Somali interpreters available. If you have a need for another language, please make a request, and we will try to accommodate it. Grant funds will cover the cost of interpreter services used through the Pilot Program, and the NSBA will be billed directly.
