The Nebraska Commission on Latino Americans commemorates 50 years of achievement.


Lincoln, Nebraska.- Commemorating 50 years of empowering the Hispanic/Latino community through a proactive approach to issues that affect their access to education, social, political, and economic opportunities, the Nebraska Commission on Latino Americans invites members of the legislature, past and current commissioners, staff, and Latinos/Latinas/Hispanic/Mexican American leaders, to an awareness discussion focused on today’s workforce and how this community may shape the future workforce in the state “Latinos in Nebraska: Transforming the Future Work in the State” by Dulce Sherman, and The Alliance for a New Immigration Consensus (ANIC) by Kathleen Grant. The Commission on Latino Americans is seeking nominations for the 2022 Community Awards


The 16th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month State Commemoration will take place on October 13, 2022. The Hispanic Heritage Month State Commemoration Committee seeks nominations for the 2022 Community Awards. We ask for your help recognizing an individual or organization who has broadened cross-cultural understanding through an event, exhibit, or body of work on issues affecting the Hispanic population or promoting the beauty of Hispanic culture. Nominations are strongly urged and may be submitted by Nebraska residents of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds. We are looking for an individual or organization whose event(s) meet and demonstrate one or more of the following criteria. Click here to read more


A recognition ceremony for Mexican migrant teachers at the Capitol in Lincoln, NE


Each summer, the Nebraska Department of State’s Binational Migrant Education Program welcomes Mexican migrant educators to our state to strengthen communities, bringing their experience and knowledge with them. This year Nebraska had the privilege to receive nine teachers from the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas, and San Luis Potosí. They arrived in our State at the beginning of June and will spend five weeks working with families and students in the cities of Omaha, Madison, Columbus, and Wakefield.Click here to read more


Former Commissioner Norma Perales (1995-1999)


As part of our series of interviews with former Commissioners, we had the privilege to interview former commissioner Norma Perales who served under Governor Ben Nelson’s administration from 1995 to 1999.Norma was originally born and raised in the state of Texas. She moved north to Iowa in 1975 and from Iowa to Norfolk, Nebraska around 1987. In Nebraska, she worked with the local domestic violence organization in Norfolk when through a series of events, her life’s work as an advocate and community organizer/activist became clear to her.Click here to read more
